Banned in this country for some time, it has had a mixed history, but has turned out to be the most common prescribed and popular prescription for diabetes. The agencies that rate effectiveness of drugs rate it as effective or more effective then the new expensive highly promoted treatments for diabetes.

However, it does have side effects which we invite you to read up on before you consider staying on this drug for a length of time. Research it on the net. Here is one notice about it being used for something called PCOS for women and we run it in its entirety.

Side Effects Metformin Many women prescribed Metformin must discontinue its use due to the gastrointestinal side effects. The most commonly reported adverse effects include diarrhea, gas and bloating, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting (1, 6). Another consideration of Metformin therapy is its effect on B12 absorption. Ten - 30% of people receiving long term Metformin therapy develop B12 mal-absorption, which could potentially lead to anemia.

It has also been shown that treatment with Metformin may increase homocysteine levels (amino acids found in the blood), which is a risk factor for atherosclerosis or fatty deposits in blood vessels (7).
The contraindications in using Metformin include liver failure, alcoholism, compromised renal function, hypoxic conditions and moderate to severe infections. These conditions predispose women to having lactic acidosis, which is a life-threatening complication and carries a mortality rate of 30% - 50% (1). End of review,

Gloucophage, Metformin, Generic names and Trade name, are the same drug... now available as a Generic at Target, Walmart and many chains on the $10 for ninety days worth of the drug, program. This compares to as much as $80 a month on the trade name version.

So regardless of which you were prescribed you can get it switched to the generic version.
Our view is you may need it temporarily to get control of your blood sugar initially, (most other things take a few weeks to be effective) but work at getting off it with your doctors permission as soon as possable by learning to control your blood sugar without medication.

Kep in mind the side effects of new drugs are not yet well established whereas the side effects here are well known., therefore you may be taking greater risk with new drugs.
